Walter says "YOU miserable piece of shit", inferring that he's talking to ONE PERSON, correct?  Up to this point in the conversation Dude has been referring to both Brandt and the Big L, calling them "they" as in "THEY gave the Dude a beeper".  Walter has no frame of reference to only address TBL, whereas Donnie is one individual and is in fact.....the one Walter is talking to.

People have been using Donny's reaction to Walter as evidence that Walter was talking to Donny. What nonsense! At what other point in the movie does Donny have any reaction to Walter's admonishments other than humble acceptance?

If anything, Donny's reaction proves that Walter's not talking to Donny. Or at the very least it's completely uncharacteristic of Walter.

I propose the participants are determined just prior to game-time so we can be sure our representatives brought their A-games. But all participants must have voiced an opinion on this thread. For example, the achiever who started this topic but didn't give his opinion has never posted again (I wonder if we scared him off?). He can't show up at the Fest throwing rocks and suddenly one side decides to recruit him to roll. Am I wrong?

Even though I'm about 15 years late, I would like to weigh in on the "you miserable piece of shit" line. I've been arguing this one for years, and I still believe that Walter's talking to The Big Lebowski, and I have several reasons.

1: NAME Can you point to any other time in the movie that Walter addresses Donny without specifically stating his name? (Shut the fuck up, Donny; Donny, please, Donny let's get a lane, etc.) People have been saying Walter never addresses people who aren't there in the second person, but certainly his admonishments to Donny by name are more numerous, and I find it unlikely that this one disputed line just happens to be the only time Walter addresses Donny without saying his name. 

2: TONE OF VOICE I do acknowledge there's a chance he's talking to Donny, but he's definitely not talking to the Dude. However, people say this line fits in with his overall treatment of Donny. Not so. There is not a single time in the movie where he addresses Donny in that tone of voice, in that style of speech. Nothing. If he is indeed talking to Donny, that line is a total anomaly. Any time Walter talks to Donny, it's direct, usually involving shouting. Never this whiny, drony, absent-minded tone of voice Walter uses in that scene (which, incidentally, he continues to use in talking about The Big L and Bunny with "that bitch," for example).

3: It's funnier if he's talking to The Big Lebowski.

One-third of us say Walter is talking to the Dude, another third says he's talking to the OTHER Jeffrey Lebowski and the rest of us think he's talking to Donny.

The Coens usually aren't so subtle, but the level of contention here is truly startling to me since we've all seen the movie a zillion times and still disagree. So I say there is no answer. I have to agree and say that it's Donny he's talking to.  Donny butts in again on Walter and the Dude's conversation wanting to know everything that he missed while he was bowling.  This is just like him butting in on the original story about the rug (where he was out of his element).  Plus, after Walter says this, Donny asks what's wrong with Walter...presumably because he yelled at Donny.  Am I wrong?
