Here's a real headfuck for you - what if the Coen Bros. wrote the line with
the intent of it being directed toward Donny, but John Goodman delivered
the line with the idea that it was aimed at Lebowski (or vice-versa)?
WARNING: Watch The Usual Suspects BEFORE reading any further.
Movie-spoiling content below...
Let me give you an example: in The Usual Suspects, what is the "real"
reason that Keaton asks Keyser Soze, "What time is it?"
He did NOT do it just to get Keyser to look at his watch (which would
satisfy Keaton's curiousity that Keyser had full use of both hands and
actually wore his watch on a different wrist than Verbal). Basically, it
would have been the first clue into discovering who Keyser Soze was.
The "real" reason Keaton asked was because his crew put a bomb on the
boat, and Keaton wanted to know if the detonation still lied ahead or had
already passed (implying the bomb would had been disarmed). But this
"real" reason would make absolutely no sense in the movie because the
bomb placement and arming scene was deleted in final editing.
So, here's my (really oblique) point, dude: "Donny or Lebowski" has a
correct answer. Walter was talking to someone, and the answer is
not something that can be determined my majority opinion, deduced by
careful scrutiny of the scene, or arrived at by quasi-philosophical
discussion. The fact is, he was talking to whoever the Coens say he was
talking to... or perhaps whoever John Goodman says he was talking to.
Crap. I'm gonna take a poll.

MP, DON'T! We're not allowed to discuss this shit anymore. We all agree that we can't know for sure. Nothing's fucked here!

I'm gonna take this poll, and I'm gonna shove it up your ass!
No, of course I'm not. Just kidding on the ass-shoving thing. I've just
always wanted to say that. It's that whole homonym thing going on with
poll and pole.
Wine is good.
Hadn't that ever occurred to you, ma'am? (whoops, wrong thread)
